Mud, debris flow damages home in Beverly Crest, closes Mulholland Drive

A mud and debris flow damaged a hillside home in the Beverly Crest neighborhood of Los Angeles Tuesday morning.

Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to the 13100 block of Mulholland Drive where the mud flow has also damaged at least one power pole, officials said.

They were alerted of the issue around 8:30 a.m.

Mud fell down the yard and hillside of one home in the area, bringing down trees and compromising a power pole, aerial video from Sky5 showed.

Three homes on the hillside were affected, but only one was evacuated as a precaution, officials said. A back patio of that home partially collapsed and that area was yellow tagged.

As a result, an elderly man who lives in the home and his caretaker were asked to evacuate.

LAFD was waiting for building and safety officials, as well as geologists, to assess the damage to the area.

Homes below the affected hillside were not being threatened as of Tuesday afternoon.

Mulholland Drive is expected to be closed to traffic between Deep Canyon Drive and Coldwater Canyon Avenue for at least 24 hours, until the rain stops, the L.A. City Emergency Management Department said. Motorists are asked to avoid the area, consider an alternate route and expect congestion and delays.

The incident occurred amid a series of damaging winter storms. Aside from the rain, powerful winds have led to downed trees and power outages throughout Southern California.
