Woman Charged in Murder of 3 Girls Also Tried to Kill Mother: DA’s Office

A 30-year-old mother charged with murder in connection with the stabbing deaths of her three young daughters also allegedly tried to kill her own mother, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said on Friday.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies discovered the three young girls, whose ages ranged from 2 months old to 2 ½ years old, lying in a pool of blood on a bed at a home in the 1000 block of West 223rd Street (map) in an unincorporated area east of Torrance on Tuesday, a Sheriff’s Department news release stated.

Their mother, Carol Coronado, was naked and allegedly holding a knife when deputies found her, investigators said. All three children were pronounced dead at the scene.

The girls were identified by their godfather, John Carrion, as Sophia, who was almost 3 years old, Yazmine, who was 1, and Xenia, who was about 2 months old.

Coronado was detained by deputies and taken to a hospital, where she remained on Friday.

The gruesome scene was initially discovered by Coronado’s own mother when she went to visit her granddaughters on Tuesday afternoon.

Prosecutors said on Friday that Coronado also attempted to kill her own mother, which is information that the Sheriff’s Department had not previously released. No further details were released about the alleged attempted murder.

Coronado has been charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, according to the DA’s office.

It was not immediately known when Coronado would be arranged, the DA’s office stated.

Prosecutors have not decided yet whether they will seek the death penalty in the case.
