A 29-year-old man died Sunday after being caught in a rip current in waters off Malibu’s Zuma Beach, officials said.

Lifeguards were rescuing people who were struggling in 6-to-8-foot surf about 3:45 p.m. when an adult male swimmer began flailing his arms and disappeared under water, according to Capt. Kenichi Haskett of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Lifeguard Division.

Lifeguards at the scene immediately began searching for the man, the captain said, and were followed by at least four scuba divers.

The missing swimmer was spotted by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter team about 5:05 p.m., Haskett said. Lifeguards used a personal watercraft to recover the man from the water.

Fire Department personnel performed CPR on the swimmer. He was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m.

His name was not immediately released.
