Massive plant fire closes roads, temporarily stops train service in Oxnard

A massive commercial fire closed roads and stopped train service in Oxnard Wednesday morning.

The fire was first reported shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the former Sunkist packaging plant in the 200 block of East Colonia Road, the City of Oxnard stated in a news release.

A multi-agency response included personnel from the Oxnard Fire Department, the Ventura County Fire Department, Ventura City Fire and the naval base’s Federal Fire Ventura County.

“Due to the dangerous conditions within the building, firefighters maintained a defensive position around the plant to extinguish the flames, which did not spread beyond the property … The building is considered a total loss,” the news release stated.

Street traffic Wednesday morning was closed on Oxnard Boulevard in both directions from from Deodar Avenue to Cooper Road due to the fire.

Colonia Road is closed from Oxnard Boulevard to Hayes Avenue.

It was unclear how long the closures would remain in place.

Railway traffic was also stopped through the area but resumed Wednesday morning, according to the City’s news release.

“The incident is considered to be one of the largest fires in Oxnard’s recent history,” the City stated in its news release.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and could take some time to determine due to the massive size, the City stated.

No deaths or injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
