Massive Fire at South L.A. Recycling Yard Sends Up Huge Plumes of Smoke

Firefighters battled a massive fire at a recycling yard in South Los Angeles on Thursday that was sending huge columns of black smoke into the air.

The fire was reported around 5:20 p.m. in the 1900 block of West Slauson Avenue near Gramercy Place, in the Chesterfield Square area, according to Erik Scott with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

At the height of the blaze, fire officials requested help from the Department of Water and Power to deal with downed power lines, the department tweeted.

Just before 7 p..m. fire officials declared a knockdown on the fire.

No injuries had been reported, Scott said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
