Police are looking for a man who allegedly punched, choked and sexually assaulted a girl on a Santa Ana park bench over the weekend.

The 14-year-old girl apparently had gotten into an argument with her mother on Nov. 24 and ran away from home. She left her phone at home and went to Cabrillo Park at 1820 E Fruit St., Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told KTLA. 

A man described as being in his 30s sat next to the victim about 1 a.m. and made small talk with her, which made her feel uncomfortable. The victim tried to walk away, but the man allegedly pulled out a knife and ordered her to sit back down, police said in a news release.

He used “physical force and verbal threats” to keep her on the bench before allegedly sexually assaulting her.

The victim was eventually able to escape, but suffered multiple injuries during the attack.

Police on Wednesday released a composite sketch of the man, who is described as being between 5 feet six inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, between 160 and 170 pounds.

He is believed to have short black hair, brown eyes and a short beard. He was wearing a white button-up shirt, blue/gray shorts and a black belt with a silver buckle, police said.

The man did not appear to be homeless and only spoke Spanish.

Detectives have been searching the area for the man and are also hoping to find surveillance video of the incident.
