A Fontana man accused of driving under the influence and crashing into an on-duty San Bernardino police officer, killing the 40-year-old man, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.
Archie Green III, 27, pleaded not guilty to one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, one count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and one count of driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol content causing injury, according to a tweet from the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.
A motion to release Green on his own recognizance and reduce his bail from $250,000 was also denied.
Green was arrested after last Thursday’s Ontario-area crash, in which he is accused of running a red light and broadsiding Officer Bryce Hanes patrol car.
Hanes, a 12-year-veteran of the San Bernardino Police Department, died that day at a hospital after the crash caused his car to spin across an intersection and slam into a traffic signal.
The death of an officer while they are on duty can be especially difficult for a community, said Deputy District Attorney Jason Liso outside the courthouse on Tuesday.
“In our society and in our community, every life in precious. I think losing a police officer in the line of duty is the kind of thing that rocks our community to the core. … We’re going to treat this life as precious as anything else,” Liso said.
Green is due back in the Rancho Cucamonga Superior Court on Dec. 2 for a pre-preliminary hearing.
