A Chino man suspected of vehicle theft was taken into custody after barricading himself inside his home following a police pursuit Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The incident began in the area of North Cucamonga and East Fourth Street around 1:15 a.m. when officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect, identified by police as 25-year-old Robert Perea, according to an Ontario Police Department news release.
Ontario police Officer George Ramirez had said they had been trying to stop a possible DUI driver.
“It was later determined the vehicle was driving was stolen,” Ramirez said, adding Perea had a prior warrant for a stolen vehicle.
The suspect allegedly failed to stop and led officers on a high-speed chase through Ontario and into Chino, the release stated.
Perea fled to his residence after allegedly crashing into another vehicle in the area of Fifth and D streets, police officials said in the release.
He then barricaded himself into his residence in the 13100 block of Fifth Street, prompting an Ontario police SWAT team to respond the home, according to the release.
After about an hour of negotiations, Perea surrendered and was arrested without incident, police said.
It was not immediately known if the man was armed.
He eventually surrendered to police.
Perea was booked into West Valley Detention Center on vehicle theft, felony evading and an outstanding no bail parole hold warrant for vehicle theft, according to the release.
