Man accused of fatally shooting woman in front of their son at Whittier Kohl’s is arrested in Barstow

A man who allegedly shot and killed a woman in front of their son at a Kohl’s in Whittier was taken into custody in Barstow, police and family said Wednesday.

Enrique Acosta is shown in a photo released by the Whittier Police Department on Dec. 23, 2020.

The incident unfolded about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the store in the Whittwood Town Center, located at 15602 Whittwood Lane.

Whittier police officials told KTLA that a man entered the store and shot the victim, who died at the scene.

The incident appeared to be a domestic dispute.

The man left the scene before police arrived.

During their investigation, police identified the suspect as Enrique Acosta, 41, and he was eventually arrested in the Barstow area, officials said in a social media post. It is unclear when he was arrested.

Acosta was taken to the Whittier Police Department jail and was booked on suspicion of murder. He is being held on $1 million bail, police said in the post.

Police have not released additional information about the shooting or the arrest.

Though the victim’s name has not been released by authorities, a GoFundMe page set up by family members identified her as Yvonne Rodriguez, a mother of two.

The fundraising page alleges Rodriguez was killed by her husband “after years of domestic abuse, physical and mental.”

“Unfortunately, her son witnessed the entire dispute between his mother and father at the department store,” the page reads.

Rodriguez was described as “an amazing aunt, godmother, daughter, sister and friend to many.”

She is survived by her son, who just turned 8, and her daughter, who just turned 22, according to the fundraising page.

Proceeds from the GoFundMe account will go toward organizing a funeral and to enroll the victim’s son in counseling, the page stated.

Yvonne Rodriguez, right, is seen in an undated photo shared on a GoFundMe page on Dec. 23, 2020.
