Malibu Canyon Road reopens nearly a week after massive mudslide

Nearly a week after a devastating mudslide closed both directions of Malibu Canyon Road last week, officials announced its reopening Monday morning.

“As of 7:15am, Malibu Canyon Rd is back open!” the California Highway Patrol posted on X, formerly Twitter.

An image sent along with the post showed the open roadway with a K-Rail still in place along one side.

The road had been closed since Wednesday between Piuma and Francisco Ranch roads due to a slide that occurred during heavy rainfall.

Dashcam video captured the event, showing rocks and debris nearly crushed several vehicles that were traveling along Malibu Canyon Road during the morning hours.

Crews announced after the mudslide that the roadway would remain closed until at least Friday.

With work finally completed Monday, the CHP thanked motorists for their patience.

“Thanks for your patience as crews have worked for days to ensure the roadway is safe for everyone!” the post read.
