The man entered the lobby of the Santa Anita Inn, located at 130 W. Huntington Dr., just before 2 a.m. and forced the clerk into a back room, Arcadia Police Department Lt. Tom Cullen stated in a news release.

The robber then pulled out a gun and struck the clerk in the head, cutting him, Cullen stated.

The clerk’s injuries were described as moderate.

The robber tried unsuccessfully to restrain the victim and fled after taking an undetermined amount of money from the hotel register on his way out of the lobby, according to Cullen.

It was not known if the robber left the location in a vehicle or on foot.

The robber was described as a black man, about 30 years old, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build.

He was wearing a dark-colored hat, or a dark-hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

The clerk was taken to an area hospital to be treated for the lacerations on his head.
