Authorities responding to a complaint about loud music later discovered the body of a man inside an apartment near East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park early Friday.

The Monterey Park Police Department initially responded to an apartment complex in the 1100 block of College View Drive about 5:45 a.m., officials said.

Officers made contact with a person inside the apartment who told them a man was dead inside the home. The officers went inside and found an unresponsive man on the floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said in an updated news release.

One person was detained at the location for questioning, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Charles Calderaro told KTLA, without elaborating. The relationship between the two people is unknown and it is also unclear if the man who died lived in the apartment.

That man has not been identified and his cause of death has not been determined. He is believed to be in his 50s, Calderaro said.

Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives were called to the scene to assist in the investigation and were canvassing the area for possible witnesses.

Members of the crime lab also responded and were processing the scene for clues, Calderaro said.

The scene is across the street from the college, which is located at 1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez.

No additional information about the man or what led to his death have been released.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the Sheriff’s Department’s homicide bureau at 323-890-5500.
