Amid the higher temperatures in much of Southern California Thursday, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties issued heat advisories and told residents to prepare.
San Bernardino County Health Officer Dr. Michael Sequeira on Thursday said the heat is expected to remain through the weekend and “it is crucial for individuals to be aware of these risks and take necessary precautions.”
“Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, can be life-threatening, especially for vulnerable populations,” Sequeira said. “By staying cool, staying hydrated, and staying informed, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from the dangers of extreme heat. Summer heat awareness is not just about comfort; It is a matter of public health and safety.”
In Los Angeles County, the Antelope Valley is expected to see dangerous temperatures starting on Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Officials offered several tips for people and pets:
- Stay cool
- Stay in air-conditioned buildings
- To find an air-conditioned cooling center, call 211 or contact 800-510-2020 in San Bernardino County and ready.lacounty.gov/heat in Los Angeles County
- Do not rely on a fan as a primary cooling device
- Limit outdoor activity, especially during the heat of the day
- Wear loose, light-colored and lightweight clothing
- Take cool baths and showers
- Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even with the windows open
- Stay in air-conditioned buildings
- Stay hydrated
- Drink more than usual
- Drink two to four cups every hour while working
- Avoid liquids with sugar and caffeine
- Protect your pets
- Bring pets indoors during extreme heat
- Make sure pets who remain outdoors have shade
- Don’t force animals to exercise when it’s hot; instead wait until the early morning or late in the evening
