1 shot in Fontana road-rage incident; several detained

One person was shot and several people are being detained for questioning following a road-rage incident in Fontana Thursday morning, police said.

The incident unfolded on the westbound 210 Freeway near the interchange with the 215 Freeway in San Bernardino between a black truck and an Audi sedan, authorities told KTLA.

One of the drivers apparently cut the other driver off and both parties allegedly began chasing each other down the 210.

Both vehicles eventually exited on Cherry Avenue and drove to the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Hemlock Street where a minor crash happened between both vehicles, officials said.

The driver of a third vehicle, a Mustang, showed up with more people and the incident escalated into an argument, leading to shots being fired.

Around 9:45 a.m. Fontana police began receiving calls about a fight and shots fired in the intersection.

Nearby Cecilia Lucero Solorio Elementary School was locked down amid the dangerous ordeal, but the order was lifted shortly after.

Responding officers saw the Mustang and the Audi drive off from the scene and began chasing the drivers.

The pursuit ended in the parking lot of a nearby Kaiser Permanente hospital and police discovered that a passenger in the Mustang was suffering a gunshot wound to the upper torso, officials said.

That person was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

A preliminary investigation revealed that at some point during the altercation near the school, someone used a baseball bat to break the windows of the black truck. A person inside the truck at one point fired a gun from inside the vehicle, possibly in self defense, police said.

No arrests have been made in the incident, but all of the people involved have been detained for questioning.

Detectives are looking for surveillance video to help them determine what exactly occurred.

No further details have been released.

Police remained at the scene around 12:30 p.m., along with a pickup truck that appeared to have at least one damaged window, aerial video from Sky5 showed.
