Fontana church holds drive-in service amid coronavirus pandemic

As the coronavirus pandemic forced people indoors and changed how religious institutions practiced their faith, Bishop Cecil Richardson with Lighthouse Church in Fontana held three evening services in the church’s parking lot on Sunday.

Richardson preached through a microphone in front of four or five cars, where listeners stayed amid the gloomy, at times wet weather.

The church had passed out 600 fliers advertising the service over the last two days.

“Right now, I’m like Lord, if you send one person, I’m satisfied,” he told KTLA. He said he hoped to get the word out to more people, including those who aren’t part of his congregation.

He said he expects to continue offering the drive-in service in the following weeks, even months–depending on how long the outbreak prevents people from gathering.

“They don’t have to worry about the virus,” Richardson said. “They’re staying in their enclosed environment, getting encouraged, uplifted, and most importantly a word from the Lord.”
