A “flaring event” at the ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance on Wednesday evening was triggered by a power outage, according to city officials.
A hazmat response team arrived at the refinery around 6 p.m., according to Captain Stanley Maloy with the Torrance Fire Department.
As a precaution, fire crews were monitoring the event and road barriers were in place on Crenshaw and Del Amo boulevards.
The power was back on and personnel were working to restore operations, according to a statement by ExxonMobil.
“The refinery subsequently notified the California Office of Emergency Services at approximately 6:45 pm that it believes the refinery may have exceeded the reportable quantity of 500 lbs. for sulfur dioxide,” the statement read.
There was no impact to the community, according to the company.
Teams monitoring the air quality in the city of Torrance had not found any hazardous readings, according to fire department Battalion Chief Bob Millea.
