Firefighters were called to the 100 block of West Oakmont Drive after smoke was reported in the area just after 6:15 a.m., said Battalion Chief Dan France with the Montebello Fire Department.

The home’s resident, who was described as a disabled older man, told officials he discovered the fire after his radio went out and he went to the garage to investigate, France said.

The man managed to get away from the fire without injury, France said.

Arriving firefighters found the garage completely engulfed in flames, which were reaching 40 to 50 feet in the air, France said.

Firefighters knocked down the blaze just before 7 a.m., according to officials.

An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the fire, France said.
