Dozens of family members, friends and fellow auto enthusiasts gathered in Upland on Sunday for a memorial in honor of 17-year-old Anthony Macias.
The Montclair High School Student was killed on the evening of March 3 when the car he was driving veered off a road in the foothills north of Claremont and plummeted some 50 feet, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reported, citing the California Highway Patrol.
CHP investigators did not believe alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash, according to the newspaper.
Macias’ friend, 17-year-old Rene Chacon, was the sole passenger in the vehicle. He suffered a broken wrist, facial swelling and pain in his shoulder.
On Sunday he stood among the mourners in the parking lot of a Hobby Lobby, where a personal car show of sorts was held in honor of the deceased teenager.
“I’m still hurt about the loss,” said Chacon, who wore a T-shirt with the words “Rest In Peace” above a photo of Macias. “I wish he was still with me right now.” Both teens were auto shop students at Montclair High.
Macias’ mother, Juana Macias, became visibly emotional as she remembered her son.
“I don’t know what to say. My son had a wonderful future. He was only 17 years old,” she said. “He was a very good boy and very friendly. He was always helping everybody.”
