2 dead after gunfire erupts in L.A.’s Harbor region

Two men are dead after a double shooting Thursday outside the San Pedro Adult Learning Center.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of the shooting at Santa Cruz and Meyler streets just before 4 p.m. authorities confirmed to KTLA.

Medical personnel with the Los Angeles Fire Department also responded to the scene when two ambulances were requested in addition to a canopy, which is used to cover deceased individuals while detectives investigate the crime scene.

Details are extremely limited and it’s unclear exactly how the shooting unfolded, but video posted to the Citizen App showed police and firefighters standing near one victim on the sidewalk who had already been covered by a blanket.

The second victim was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. They were later pronounced dead.

“The man that was pronounced dead at the scene was 19 and the other individual was approximately 45,” LAPD Cpt. Jamie Bennet told KTLA.

Aerial footage from the scene captured by Sky5 showed a heavy police presence just before 6 p.m. as homicide investigators worked to gather clues as evidence markers were placed next to shell casings and shattered glass in the street.

Lisa Torres, who lives near the crime scene, told KTLA’s Samantha Cortese that the shooting felt too close to home and she worries that she can’t even come out of the house anymore.

“This is our second shooting in the same spot,” she said. “We had one here on Mother’s Day. It’s just very sad that this keeps going on here in our beautiful town.”

The lifelong San Pedro resident said people used to be able to walk the streets and not worry, but now people have to watch their backs.

“People are killing for no reason,” Torres added.

At around 10 p.m., authorities were seen serving a search warrant at a nearby home.

Authorities have not released the identities of the two victims. They did, however, say they are investigating a possible getaway car, but have yet to release the vehicle’s description.
