Daughter of Veteran LAPD Officer Arrested In Deadly Gardena Hit-And-Run

GARDENA, Calif. (KTLA) – The daughter of a veteran Los Angeles Police Department officer was arrested for a fatal hit-and-run, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

Vanessa Yanez, 22, was taken into custody on Wednesday, according to the Gardena Police Department.

She was booked on charges of vehicular manslaughter, perjury, filing a false police report and felony hit and run, police said.

Investigators believe Yanez, daughter of Sgt. Arturo Yanez was driving the car that struck Jesse Dotson on June 26 around 9:50 p.m.

Dotson, a postal worker, was riding his bicycle to work when he was hit.

He was transported with serious head injuries to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where he later died.

The driver did not stop to render aid, and instead fled the scene, police said.

The Gardena Police Department, along with Dotson’s family requested help from the public and surrounding law enforcement agencies in locating the driver.

Acting on a tip, investigators located and recovered the vehicle at a residence less than one mile from where the accident happened.

The driver was identified later and arrested on July 3, police said.

Dotson’s family told KTLA News that Yanez lived with her father and they want answers as to why he did not immediately turn her in.

However, Gardena police said Sgt. Yanez was not under investigation.

The Gardena Police Department Traffic Division is handling the investigation and would still like to hear from additional witnesses to this collision.

If you have any information that may help our investigation, you are urged to contact Investigator Matt Hassoldt at 310-217-6189.

Yanez’s father has been on the force at the LAPD for about 30 years.
