Crews rescue horses trapped in Palos Verdes

Crews safely rescued two horses that were trapped under heavy brush in Palos Verdes on Friday.

The horses were stuck in a ravine near the 27100 block of Sunnyridge Road, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Firefighters received calls about the trapped horses around 2:41 p.m. Crews reached their location after about an hour of traveling on foot.

Video from Sky5 showed a brown horse and a black horse standing together with their heads buried under brush as they awaited help.

The horses were found about 75 feet down a ridgeline with tract homes nearby. It’s unknown how the horses became trapped in the first place, officials said.

Fire crews had to chop down the heavy brush to gain access to the horses and create a pathway. The chainsaws and chopping sounds spooked the horses, forcing crews to work slowly.

After about three hours, the horses were extricated and walked back up to safety, authorities confirm.

Veterinarians and animal crews responded to the scene. It’s unclear what injuries the horses may have sustained.
