Classes were canceled at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach on Tuesday, one day after anonymous threats against the school were posted on social media, officials said.
“If you go to Costa you should watch out very closely at school today,” a post stated about 11 a.m. Monday on the mobile app Yik Yak, according to a news release from the Manhattan Beach Police Department.
The app, which available on Apple and Android devices, is popular among teenagers.
Officers responded to the campus, in the 1400 block of Artesia Boulevard (map), and placed it on lockdown while police and school staff conducted an investigation, the release said.
A post that read “Nice try Costa, today was just a drill” was posted on Yik Yak about 4 p.m., said Officer Stephani Martin. School officials then sent out a message to students and parents, describing the threats and authorities’ response.
Police were investigating two additional posts that were posted at 8:31 p.m. and 8:44 p.m., respectively: “Almost every school shooter has left warnings before they committed their crimes that everyone ignored … it’s something to take seriously. Just remember that,” and, “Apparently there is a 3rd threat tomorrow at 2 P, be ready Costa, you’re going on lockdown.”
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the postings is asked to call 911 or the Manhattan Police Department at 310-802-5140.
