CHP investigating another round of shootings amid BB gun attacks on 91 Freeway in SoCal

Authorities on Thursday are investigating another round of shootings amid a series of recent BB gun attacks on the 91 Freeway in Southern California.

Three drivers reported incidents between Wednesday night and Thursday morning in the Cerritos area.

One driver, who was headed to work at about 6:50 a.m. Thursday, was driving westbound near Bloomfield Avenue when he heard a pop, California Highway Patrol Officer Marcos Iniguez said.

The driver realized his driver’s side rear window had been shot at and broken.

“It appears to be a very small hole. It could be a BB or a pellet gun,” Iniguez said.

Like most of the victims in the recent shootings, this victim was driving a white vehicle. He said his children typically sit in the back seat.

The victim was grateful he wasn’t injured in the shooting, his wife said. “The fact that it hit the rear window just freaked me out,” she said.

The shooting was the third on the 91 Freeway in the Cerritos area in the past 24 hours.

About 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a driver said he was shot at on the freeway near Norwalk Boulevard, CHP Officer Kimbrall said.

Although a BB or pellet gun is believed to be involved in several similar incidents, Kimbrall said it was unclear if that was the case in this shooting.

The front of the victim’s vehicle, a white Toyota Camry, was covered in with about 30 small holes. The driver was not injured in the incident.

A second incident Wednesday night was reported on the 91 Freeway near the 605 interchange.

The victim believes the shooters were two women in a passing vehicle but investigators have not provided any suspect descriptions.

At least six other incidents were reported on the 91 Freeway in Riverside County since Sunday.

“It is becoming somewhat of a trend. … We don’t know if it’s a copycat incident but it’s becoming more prevalent,” Iniguez said.

There are other reports, not on the 91 Freeway in other counties, Iniguez said. So far, investigations are underway in Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino counties, he said.

Drivers are asked to check their dashcam footage if they were in the area at the time of any of the shootings. Anyone with information can contact the CHP at 951-637-8000.
