Citing concerns with public safety and an increase in fatal crashes, the California Highway Patrol announced Wednesday its intention to crack down on speed enforcement operations in Malibu.

The Malibu Task Force, an operation created in tandem with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, has issued more than 150 traffic citations throughout the last two weeks, the CHP said. Those citations included:

The increase in enforcement is in an effort to deter violations including “failure to obey traffic signals, speeding, reckless driving and driving under the influence,” the CHP said.

The CHP said officers arrested a driver traveling at a speed more than 100 miles per hour while under the influence on Feb. 9.

Calls for speed enforcement heated up late last year after a series of fatal and injury crashes. In October, four Pepperdine University students were killed when a car collided with them on Pacific Coast Highway.
