A brush fire erupted close to the 5 Freeway in the Gorman area Sunday afternoon, prompting officials to order nearby evacuations.
The fire, dubbed the Tumbleweed Fire, had scorched about 1,000 acres and was burning at a rapid rate amid gusty winds, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
Two minor firefighter injuries were reported.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory through Monday afternoon.
Residents can check their air quality in real time by downloading the South Coast AQMD app, or by viewing the AQI map found at the bottom of the www.AQMD.gov homepage.
The fire was reported near Gorman Post Road and the Southbound 5 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
As of 7:24 p.m., evacuations were underway in the Hungry Valley Recreation Area only. No structures lost or damaged, the L.A. County Fire Department tweeted.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles to get through.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
