Man dead after standoff with Beverly Hills police near Rodeo Drive

The driver of a gray van who was in a standoff with the Beverly Hills Police Department Saturday after refusing to exit his vehicle has died, police said.

The standoff began shortly after 6 p.m., when officers executed a traffic stop on the van near the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive, according to Sgt. Green of the BHPD.

The van came to a halt, but Green said at least one person was refusing to come out of the vehicle, which was pinned in by police cars and a SWAT team vehicle.

“After a long unsuccessful period to communicate, SWAT officers entered the van and located an unresponsive lone male. The male was treated by Beverly Hills Fire Department paramedics and later declared deceased at the scene,” added Lt. Giovanni Trejo of the BHPD.

The investigation remains ongoing, and a cause of death is still unknown as of Sunday evening, police said.
