A Bay Area mother was shot and killed inside a vehicle in front of her two young sons, apparently as she was taking both boys to day care, and police are looking for her estranged boyfriend in connection with the shooting, authorities said.
The victim was behind the wheel of a silver Jeep SUV shortly before 9 a.m. in a residential neighborhood of Richmond when she was shot in the torso, according to the Richmond Police Department.
The victim, Rashanda Franklin, 29, was believed to be taking the boys, who are both toddlers, to day care.
“The children witnessed the entire event,” Richmond Police Department Lt. Felix Tan said in an interview with The San Francisco Chronicle. “I can’t imagine witnessing your mother’s murder.”
“It’s a targeted shooting, possibly domestic violence,” Tan told San Francisco-area television station KPIX.
Investigators determined that Franklin spotted her estranged boyfriend, Lawyer Dushan McBride, while taking the kids to day care and she drove around to avoid him, officials said. He then apparently followed her until she arrived at a stop sign and he drove his car ahead of her. Police said McBride then got out of his car, walked up to Franklin and argued with her before he shot her in front of her children. McBride then drove away from the scene. His car is described as a 2007 silver four door Mercedes S550 with paper plates.
Police have issued a $2 million warrant for McBride’s arrest. He is described as being African-American, is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 225 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes, officials said.
Police were interviewing multiple people who witnessed the fatal shooting, according to KPIX.
