Special enforcement and crisis negotiation teams were also called to the 8800 block of Artesia Boulevard, just south of the 91 Freeway (map), after a report of a domestic dispute about 5:30 a.m., said Sgt. Tom Burt of the sheriff’s Lakewood station. Some nearby residents were evacuated during the standoff.

Negotiators were in contact with the unidentified man before the shooting occurred, Burt said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman who was held hostage inside the apartment unit was “safely rescued and uninjured,” the Sheriff’s Department said.

Homicide detectives were en route to the scene, and a multi-agency investigation was underway.

No road closures were in effect due to the incident.
