Elderly man suspected of killing family, self in Los Angeles murder-suicide

LOS ANGELES – An elderly man is suspected of killing his wife and their adult children before turning a gun on himself in Granada Hills on Saturday night.

Officers initially responded to reports of a shooting at a home in the 11600 block of Lerdo Avenue at around 6:50 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Arriving officers knocked at the front door but no one answered. Police forced their way inside where four people were found dead at the scene. There was one witness inside the home who directed police to the victims’ bodies.

Three victims were identified as a woman in her late 40s, a man in his late 40s and a woman in her 80s.

The fourth person, identified as a man in his 80s, was found in a different area of the home with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities confirmed the victims were all family members. The witness, identified only as an adult, was not confirmed as part of the family.

The circumstances surrounding the deaths are unclear but investigators believe the incident may have been a murder-suicide.

“I don’t know how much more terrifying and horrific of a scene it could be,” said LAPD Capt. Kelly Muniz. “When you have four persons who are deceased, the only positive point is that you at least have one witness who has survived this incident.”
