About 500 people were in a parking lot outside the fast-food restaurant, at South Western Avenue and West Capitol Drive (map), following a game between Banning and San Pedro high schools, said a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division.

Gunshots were fired about 10:30 p.m., striking three males, ages 15, 17 and 19, the LAPD said. The 15-year-old, wounded in the chest, was hospitalized in critical condition and was expected to survive. The other two males suffered injuries that were said to be not life-threatening.

The shooter, described only as a Hispanic man, remained at large Saturday. Police believe the incident was gang-related.

In an interview near the scene, a 1984 graduate of San Pedro High who attended Friday night’s game against Banning High said the rivalry between the two schools was “heated.”

“Banning’s an up-and-coming school. … Hopefully it’s just a random thing and had nothing to do with the high schools at all,” he said of the shooting. “It’s a sad situation.”
