A gunman suspected of killing three people and injuring two others in Pasadena was taken into custody Saturday afternoon, according to authorities.
Several people called 911 reporting shots fired in the 1700 block of North Summit Avenue (map) around 4:20 p.m., according to a Pasadena Police Department news release.
Responding officers came under “heavy, direct” gunfire after discovering a victim lying on a sidewalk.
No officers were injured, but two squad cars were struck during the attack, Lisa Derderian with the Pasadena Fire Department said.
The shooter then barricaded himself in a local residence and contacted the Police Department’s communications center, the news release stated.
The suspected gunman, 35-year-old John Izeal Smith, surrendered and was apprehended before 6 p.m., Pasadena police Chief Phillip L. Sanchez said.
Two men and one woman were killed during the incident, Sanchez said.
The other two victims’ injuries were minor to moderate, the news release stated.
Police suspected the shooting was related to a dispute between a landlord and tenant, Sanchez said.
Smith was booked on suspicion of murder at the Pasadena city jail.
