A man with schizophrenia who was believed to have stopped taking his medication has been booked on suspicion of assaulting two officers at an assisted living facility in Garden Grove, police said on Wednesday.
A caretaker from Nancy’s Guest Village located in the 13900 block of Clinton Street (map) called police after Nam Hoag Nguyen, 41, allegedly became violent and began vandalizing her vehicle just after 11 p.m. on Tuesday, the Garden Grove Police Department stated in a news release.
The incident took place as the caretaker was attempting to transfer Nguyen to a hospital for treatment because he was said to have stopped taking his medication, according to the release.
When officers arrived, Nguyen fled back into the facility and went to his room where two police officers attempted to detain him, police stated.
Nguyen allegedly attacked the officers and knocked one of them to the ground, where he climbed on top of the officer and repeatedly punched him in the head, according to the news release.
The second officer used her Taser on Nguyen, but it had no effect, police stated.
The fight continued until more officers could arrive and restrain Nguyen, who was taken into custody.
The officer who was knocked to the ground suffered a concussion, blurred vision, a cut above his left eye and several contusions, the news release stated.
The 14-year veteran officer was taken to UCI Medical Center where he was treated and later released.
The second officer, a 20-year veteran of the Police Department, suffered a broken rib and pain to her left ankle, according to the news release. She was also treated by medical staff and released.
Nguyen was medically cleared at the Garden Grove Medical Center and later booked for assault on a police officer with great bodily injury, the Police Department stated.
