1 dead, 5 injured in 2-car crash in Santa Monica Mountains, authorities say

One person was killed and five people were hurt when two cars collided in an unincorporated area of the Santa Monica Mountains north of Malibu, officials said.

The crash, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Malibu Canyon Road near the intersections with Piuma Road and Mesa Peak Motorway, left one person dead at the scene and four others in critical condition, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Officer Kimball of the California Highway Patrol.

Though initial reports from authorities said there were seven people hurt, a report released by the CHP on Sunday showed a total of six people were involved.

Officer Figueroa of the CHP described the incident as a major-injury crash.

The intersection, which is located just south of the intersection of Malibu Canyon and Piuma roads, was closed for six hours, according to the CHP report.
