Woman killed in fiery crash after car veers off 101 Freeway

One person was killed and another badly injured in a fiery crash on the right shoulder of the 101 Freeway that prompted lane closures through the Silver Lake area Friday morning. 

The crash was reported shortly before 2:30 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway just north of Rosemont Avenue.

The vehicle veered out of control for unknown reasons and crashed onto the right shoulder embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A good Samaritan was seen pulling an injured person from the vehicle, which eventually burst into flames.

The incident later turned into a fatal investigation after one person was pronounced dead, a CHP spokesperson said.

The deceased person was later identified as a 30-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle.

The driver, described as a 30-year-old man, suffered major injuries, according to the CHP. No further details about his condition were available.

Authorities were investigating what caused the crash.

Video from the scene showed three right lanes on the northbound side of 101 Freeway were closed through the Silver Lake area at 4 a.m.

The freeway was reopened to traffic by 8 a.m.
