Two women died and five other people were injured in a multivehicle collision that left a portion of the 71 Freeway in Chino Hills closed for hours on Wednesday, authorities said.
The crash was reported just after 8:15 a.m. on the southbound 71 at Butterfield Ranch Road, A total of six vehicles were involved in the wreck, including a box truck that overturned on top of a car, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Two women in a white Honda Accord were killed in the crash, said CHP Officer Joseph Corney. Neither was immediately identified.
Five others were injured and taken to local hospitals, he said. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The Accord was not the car that ended up beneath the box truck, Corney added.
The wreck left all southbound lanes blocked during the rush-hour commute, and traffic was at a standstill in the area for most of the morning. Some motorists were turning around and driving the wrong way in the carpool lane in order to get out of the traffic, according to CHP’s incident log.
All southbound lanes were reopened shortly before 1 p.m., the log stated.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. No additional information has been released.
