Our parents tell us not to play with our food, but we can make an exception for CANSTRUCTION LA. You can describe this as a “foodraiser” for the Los Angeles Food Bank. Architects, designers, builders, and engineers donate their time and talent to create large scale structures made entirely of canned foods. All money  raised, as well as all cans used for the structures, are donated to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Last year, CANSTRUCTION LA contributed 27,249 pounds of food and $15,799.00

We can learn more about drought tolerant gardening at the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants in Sun Valley. The non-profit organization not only sells a variety of water sipping plants and trees, the staff also offers a variety of classes. Check the website early and often since the governor’s recent mandatory water restrictions have made this kind of gardening a popular topic.

This spring, L.A. Zoo guests are invited to enjoy an unusual opportunity to “MEET OUR BABIES,” including the soon-to-be-named baby kangaroo as well as Rosie, the near-legendary baby hippo, a baby giraffe, five baby chimpanzees, two baby otters, a baby howler monkey, baby koala, baby pronghorn, baby sifaka, and even baby piranha.  An Activity Guide with a special map is available at the Zoo’s entrance to help visitors locate all the heart-melting young ones while learning more about these animals and the zoo’s breeding programs that are so vital to saving endangered and vulnerable species by serving as a hedge against extinction in the wild.

To enter the #NameOurRoo contest, visit the L.A. Zoo between now and April 26, take a picture of the Western gray kangaroo baby or any part of the exhibit, post it on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #NameOurRoo and your proposed name, or upload your photo and proposed name at www.LAZooBabies.org (“Entry”). Then share your entry with friends via a special link provided and encourage them to vote for your proposed name.  The Grand Prize Winner will receive a GoPro HERO4 Camera ($399 value) and a Family Deluxe Membership to the Zoo ($165 value), while two runners up each receive a Family Membership ($126 value).  More details and the official rules are available at www.lazoo.org/NameOurRoo .

As an added bonus this spring, every day through June 30 visitors to the L.A. Also, we can see how parents in the animal world care for their young at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. There are baby sharks as well as baby penguins for a discount.
