Who is Attilio Brillembourg? Man tied to European royalty disappears in Malibu

Authorities in Southern California continue to search for Attilio Brillembourg, a New York man with ties to European royalty who vanished over the weekend.

Brillembourg, 53, was last seen at 1:10 a.m. Saturday in the 6000 block of Murphy Way in Malibu, a secluded hillside community known for its posh mansions overlooking the Pacific Ocean, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

He was wearing a blue shirt, gray pants and no shoes, authorities said.

The case is being handled by the department’s homicide bureau; however, that alone is not an indication that foul play is suspected. Thus far, law enforcement has released very little information about the circumstances of his disappearance.

“There is concern for Mr. Brillembourg’s well-being,” the department stated in its missing person report on Sunday.

Brillembourg’s connection to European royalty is somewhat complicated. According to the Daily Beast, his father, who shares the same name, is stepfather to Princess Tatiana of Greece and Denmark.

Tatiana, 43, whose surname is Blatnik, was married to Prince Nikolaos, the third child of the last King and Queen of Greece. The elder Brillembourg was photographed escorting his stepdaughter to the couple’s 2010 wedding in Spetses, Greece.

The couple announced their separation last month after 13 years of marriage, but Princess Tatiana has retained her royal title.

“This decision was reached with great care and mutual respect, reflecting the depth of their appreciation for one another and the moments they have shared,” the announcement read.

The younger Brillembourg has kept a relatively low public profile.

In 2009, Getty Images snapped photographs of Brillembourg and then-girlfriend Kiera Chaplin shopping on the island of Capri in Italy. Chaplin, 41, is an actress, model and entrepreneur and the granddaughter of silent film legend Charlie Chaplin.

Brillembourg is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 165 pounds and has an “unknown tattoo” on his upper thigh. Authorities told KTLA 5 News that he is no longer directly associated with the royal family.
