Beachgoers are being warned about entering the ocean waters at some of Los Angeles County’s most popular beaches ahead of the busy Memorial Day weekend.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued the advisory on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday.
Residents can still visit the affected beaches but should “avoid swimming, surfing, and playing in ocean waters.”
The following beaches were named in the warnings:
- Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro: The entire swim area.
- Malibu Lagoon at Surfrider Beach: 100 yards up and down the coast from the public restrooms.
- Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey: The entire swim area.
- Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica: 100 yards up and down the coast from the pier
- Santa Monica Canyon Creek at Will Rogers State Beach near Will Rogers Tower 18: 100 yards up and down the coast from the creek.
“These warnings have been issued due to bacterial levels exceeding health standards when last tested,” the department stated.
The warnings will remain in place pending future tests.
The news has already spoiled plans for many beachgoers along the Southern California coastline Friday morning.
“It’s kind of surprising. We were hoping for a swim while we were here. We are from Norway so it’s not that warm there yet,” Ive Livik told KTLA’s Jennifer McGraw.
Visitors can travel further up or down the coastline if they really want to take a dip in the cool ocean waters.
Warnings were recently lifted at the following beach areas:
- Temescal Canyon storm drain at Will Rogers State Beach
- Pico-Kenter storm drain at Santa Monica State Beach near Santa Monica South Tower 20
