It was a busy Fourth of July holiday for deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office assigned to respond to illegal fireworks calls.

From July 1 through July 7, deputies confiscated more than 1,500 pounds of illegal fireworks and responded to around 1,300 calls for service.

The Sheriff’s Department called the weeklong detail “Operation Safe and Sane,” which focuses on enforcing existing laws against illegal fireworks.

The operation was conducted with “zero tolerance,” officials said, in partnership with the Sheriff’s Department’s special enforcement division, arson and bomb squad, patrol deputies and partners at local fire departments.

In total, 134 people were cited for illegal fireworks and seven were arrested.

Despite the conclusion of the holiday, dispatchers are still receiving calls about fireworks, which remain illegal in San Bernardino County.

Anyone with information about illegal fireworks being set off is asked to contact their nearest law enforcement agency. You can also submit an anonymous tip online or by calling 1-800-782-7463.
