These Express stores are closing in California

More than a dozen Express clothing store locations in California will be permanently closed as the popular retailer navigates Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to paperwork filed by its debtors this week.

Columbus, Ohio-based Express Inc., which was founded in 1980, announced on Monday that it plans to shutter 95 stores across the United States as its operations are acquired by WHP Global.


“Express is continuing to serve customers in stores and online across its EXPRESS, Bonobos and UpWest brands and expects to conduct business as usual as the Company works to right-size its lease portfolio and operations,” the company said in a statement.

Express has 48 locations in California, 16 of which will close. The majority are in Southern California.

Express reported nearly $1.2 billion in total debt and $1.3 billion in total assets in its Chapter 11 petition, which was filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.
