An 80-year-old man was arrested Wednesday evening after he allegedly shot and killed another 80-year-old man at a home in Thousand Oaks.

Deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on the 2400 block of Avenida De Las Plantas around 10:05 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a request to perform a welfare check.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found an 80-year-old man dead from at least one gunshot wound. He was identified as Gerald Sherman.

Another man, the victim’s roommate, 80-year-old Edward Fegley, was arrested at the scene.

Investigators believe that some type of “physical altercation” happened between the two men, which led to Fegley shooting and killing the victim.

Fegley and Sherman had been lifelong friends, officials said.

Fegley was taken into custody and booked into the Ventura County Main Jail in Ventura where he is being held on $790,000 bail.

He is due in court on June 24 to face charges for murder, the Sheriff’s Office says.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting and anyone with information related to the investigation is urged to contact Detective Michael Marco 805-384-4739.

The victim’s identity is being withheld at this time.
