8-year-old girl, man fatally shot in Sacramento

A 22-year-old man has been arrested in the killings of a man and an 8-year-old girl who were fatally shot in Sacramento Tuesday night during a dispute between neighbors, police said.

The Sacramento Police Department said in a brief statement Wednesday that officers arrested Tyrice Martin, 22, in connection with a fatal shooting.

It said the identity of the victims will be released once their family is notified.

Officers responded to the 2600 block of 5th Street for a report of a shooting and found the victims, each with at least one gunshot wound. The man died at the scene and the girl was taken to a hospital where she died, the department said.

An investigation “revealed that a neighborhood disturbance between two groups escalated into the tragic fatal shooting,” the department said.

Martin was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on murder charges, the department said, adding that it had no other details to release at this time.

“Every loss of life is a tragedy, but when a young child is involved, it is especially heartbreaking to the family, community, and responding officers,” Sacramento Police Department Chief Daniel Hahn said in a statement.
