A former contestant on the Mexican version of “The Voice” has died two days after he was shot while celebrating his birthday with friends in Chicago, the Associated Press reported.
The death on Saturday of Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes, 45, was confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to the AP. The singer was shot three times in the head late Thursday in an ambush outside the Tras Bambalinas School, his performing arts studio on Chicago’s southwest side, the news agency reported.
No arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting.
Police were investigating the incident as a possible robbery or attempted carjacking, according to KTLA sister station WGN.
Dozens of Fuentes’s students and loved ones, most of them dressed in white, gathered in front of the school Saturday evening.
“He came here, tried to get a job like anybody else. Now he has to go back to Mexico in a coffin,” a man at the vigil said. “His sister had to take him. That’s very sad, that somebody had to come this way and somebody has to take him that way.”
A GoFundMe page was created in the singer’s honor on the day after he was attacked.
The shooting came almost a week after 22-year-old Christina Grimmie, a former contestant on “The Voice,” was fatally shot while signing autographs in Orlando, Florida.
