Renting your house during the solar eclipse? Keep this in mind

(WSYR) – If you’re one of the many people who might be renting your house during the total solar eclipse on April 8, you might want to look into insuring your property.

According to the United Services Automobile Association (USAA), if you’re planning on renting out rooms, yards or even your whole house to these visitors, there are some steps you can take to stay protected.

In Central and Northern New York, for example, more than 100,000 people are expected to travel to see the eclipse.

Syracuse is especially going to be flooded with visitors seeking an opportunity to view the eclipse, and many in the area are taking advantage of the moment, spending the night in home rentals on Airbnb and Vrbo.

However, when it comes to renting your home, you should always be careful with keeping your house protected.

“Not having the right insurance policy can leave a host exposed. This is especially true if someone is injured on the premises, and in some cases a traditional homeowner’s policy won’t be enough,” stated USAA.

During this time, USAA is offering valuable insights to help navigate insurance concerns for those participating in eclipse-related rentals and ensure those homeowners are adequately protected.

USAA eclipse-related rental tips

“Whether you’re interested in being a single-room host or an entire-house host, it’s important to understand short-term rentals so you can properly protect your property with the right insurance coverage,” stated USAA.

To help add that coverage to your short-term rental “business,” USAA recommends updating your housing policy or getting rental property insurance (RPI).

“When it comes to RPI, it doesn’t matter which company you use to list and advertise your short-term rental property. It helps bridge the gap in certain areas that your homeowner’s policy may not cover,” stated USAA.

That includes home sharing coverage, income replacement reimburses and personal liability coverage.

“In addition to getting rental property insurance, consider an umbrella policy. This can help protect you financially beyond the limits of your homeowner’s policy,” USAA stated.
