Police were involved in a fatal shooting after they say a man with a gun threatened a group of people at a South Los Angeles gas station Wednesday night.
The incident began about 9:50 p.m. when officers were driving by the 76 gas station located near the intersection of West 111th Street and South Figueroa Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood.
The officers saw a man walk up to four people standing in the gas station’s parking area and point a gun at them, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Meghan Aguilar said.
A statement released later Thursday by the department described the victims as being seated in their vehicles when the gunman approached.
Officers commanded the suspect to stop, but the man did not cooperate, and at least one of the officers opened fire, Aguilar said.
The suspect was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene. He has not been identified.
It did not appear that the suspect had fired his weapon, Aguilar said.
Surveillance video of the incident is being collected by investigators, and a gun was recovered at the scene.
About a dozen people showed up to protest the officers after the shooting.
Video from the scene showed several of the protesters crossing a cordoned off area.
Officers say initially one woman was detained when she entered an area blocked off by crime tape around 2:30 a.m.
That prompted six more people to cross into the investigation area in an attempt to free the woman from police custody, according to LAPD.
Seven people were ultimately arrested following a struggle between protesters and officers, police said.
Officials identified the following people as being suspected of willfully resisting and obstructing a police investigation:

- Alyssa Blair, 20, of Monrovia
- Courtney Costello, 28, of Rosemead
- Torrey Costello, 27, of Rosemead
- Scotty Harrison, 25, of Los Angeles
- Marlon Pacheco, 20, of Los Angeles
- Efrain Acevedo, 30, of Los Angeles
